Heathenry 101

“Are all Heathens vikings? What is a blót? Do I need to own a drinking horn?”

Many people come to Heathenry with questions and misconceptions. In this workshop, we’ll answer some of these questions and more from a modern but historically rooted perspective. This workshop covers the basics of Heathen religion and practice including core concepts like ritual forms, spirits, magic, and culture.

Relational Heathenry!

Drinking horns, runes, and vikings! These are some of the first things that likely come to mind if a member of the general public hears the word “heathenry.” This may extend to more than a few practitioners as well. However, at its core, heathenry is about relationships. Without a community to hear our oaths, enlivened tools to help us focus our work, and the aid of spirits that walk beside us every day, we are practicing a faith that has little more impact than viking cosplay. In this class we will explore how to build relationships with the spirits around you and how those relationships can inform and support your practice.

The Power of Words in Heathenry

Blót and Sumbel are two Heathen ritual forms that incorporate ritualized toasting to build connection to the spirits, the land, and each other. From an outside perspective, these ceremonies could look like an excuse to drink mead with friends under the guise of ritual. However, the construction and performance of a toast goes so much deeper than the surface. Words spoken in ritual and witnessed by a group have a broad effect on the lives and connections of all involved. Oaths go even further – they can be so impactful that many groups have elaborate rules around oaths spoken in ritual. This workshop will explore these concepts and help attendees challenge themselves while increasing their potency through their approach to words.

Orlog, Wyrd, & Luck

Orlog, Wyrd, and Luck are foundational concepts in Heathen spirituality. This workshop will focus on this interconnected triad, how they interact with each other, and how to positively increase their influences in your life and the lives of people you choose to spend your time with.

Heathenry as a Magical Practice

Heathenry has long been accused of lacking magick. Some heathens themselves will say “we don’t do magick.” This workshop will argue against those claims and set a framework for a rich magickal practice based in Norse Paganism. This class centers examples of heathen magick from the historical record, examines those examples, and walks through ways to incorporate them into a practice that can be as magickal as the practitioner chooses. We will begin with the existing medieval sources, move through history to medieval and post-medieval Icelandic practices, and end with modern practices that fit well into a heathen context.

Leadership: A Heathen Perspective

Leadership can be contemporary while also deeply rooted in human history. Written records and accounts from ancient Scandinavia, Iceland, and Germanic Europe include fascinating stories of leadership, both good and bad. This workshop explores these historic examples, what they mean in terms of skill-building and techniques, and how to create a leadership style that reflects our modern times while being firmly grounded in our history. We will focus on Heathen source materials, but the information is relevant regardless of spiritual path.
